TV SHOWS THAT SHOULD BE (Re)MADE IN INDIA

Ever since Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor announced his foray into Indian Television with the remake of American TV Series ‘24’, I had thought about which internationally acclaimed TV Shows could be remade in India and still strike a chord with the small-screen viewers here.

I have shortlisted 5 TV Shows with probable lead actors from Bollywood that should be remade for Indian audience:

(1) DEXTER- A police forensic expert who moonlights as a serial killer of criminals, who he believes have escaped justice. When high-quality content is executed ‘Dexterously’, it results in an intense and gripping drama like this masterpiece. Probable Lead Actor: Saif Ali Khan

(2) BREAKING BAD- The show follows the life of an under-achieving chemistry genius and how a fatal diagnosis affects his morality as he uses his skills by producing world’s highest quality crystal meth to provide for his family. Probable Lead Actor: Irrfan Khan

(3) THE WALKING DEAD- It’s a horror series where a police officer leads a group of survivors in a world overrun by zombies. It’s high time Indian audience is exposed to a full-on Zombie experience after getting a taste of it in Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Go Goa Gone’. Probable Lead Actor: Hrithik Roshan

(4) HOUSE M.D. - Arguably one of the toughest roles to play in television history, British actor Hugh Laurie did a fantastic job as the witty and arrogant Dr.House in this TV Series where he solves medical mysteries in a style that reminds us of another eccentric fictional character ‘Sherlock Holmes’. Probable Lead Actor: Naseeruddin Shah

(5) HOMELAND- A Marine Sergeant returns home 8 years after going ‘missing’ in Iraq and a female workaholic CIA Agent suspects he might be plotting an attack against his own country. Events unfold at breakneck speed in a one-of-its-kind terrorism-based TV Show. Probable Lead Actors: Kay Kay Menon & Konkana Sen Sharma

PANCHAYAT (TV SHOW) REVIEW

PANCHAYAT, a web-series currently being streamed at Prime Video, can aptly be described as an honest attempt to create a modern-day reincarnation of the classic TV Show MALGUDI DAYS (based on the works of R.K.Narayan) and is reminiscent of Shyam Benegal’s critically acclaimed film WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR (starring Shreyas Talpade). PANCHAYAT is the story of an engineering graduate Abhishek Tripathi, played by Jitendra Kumar (Humorously Yours, Kota Factory), who reluctantly joins as the Secretary of a panchayat office in a remote village of Uttar Pradesh on the insistence of his best friend (played by OTT sensation Biswapati Sarkar), who believed that his unique grassroots level experience would increase his chances to crack his IIM interview. Biswapati comically consoles him by saying that it would give him a chance to be the Mohan Bhargava of Phulera village. The lead character’s frustrations and how he adjusts with the difficult village life is the common thread that joins ...

EXTRACTION : MOVIE REVIEW

Over the years, some of the most-loved action films were initially criticized for having a weak, or even a nonexistent story. Some notable examples being DIEHARD, KILL BILL, TERMINATOR, PREDATOR, FIRST BLOOD etc. All these films revolved around an interesting premise (An NYPD cop single-handedly taking on German terrorists, A former assassin seeking revenge from fellow-mercenaries, A cyborg sent back in time to terminate a woman, A team of commandoes fighting an extra-terrestrial warrior in a remote South American jungle, A retired CIA agent trying to save his kidnapped daughter, A war veteran waging a one-man war against a sadistic sheriff’s department respectively) and then capitalized on this premise with a spellbinding screenplay and flamboyant performances. While some other filmmakers gave us a unique blend of an intelligent plot embellished with high-octane action. THE MATRIX (By the Wachowski brothers) , AVENGERS ENDGAME (By Russo brothers) , V FOR VENDETTA (By James M...

SPECIAL OPS (TV SHOW) REVIEW

Special Ops, an espionage thriller TV Series (comprising 8 episodes) follows a relentless R&AW analyst Himmat Singh (played by Kay Kay Menon) in his mission to end the 19 year-long man-hunt of the terrorist mastermind, who he believes, is the 6 th man behind the 2001 Parliament attack, 26/11 Mumbai attacks and another impending high-profile attack. The unique narrative structure revolves around an internal audit inquiry in which Himmat Singh (Menon) is asked to explain how and why Rs.28 crores were spent as ‘Miscellaneous’ expenses by his Middle East desk in the last 11 years. The questions by the audit committee are answered through flashbacks, narrating the back-stories of his five agents deployed in five different middle east countries and all of them with one common mission: to find and kill the 6 th invisible terrorist. The show’s central idea and the protagonist’s (Menon’s) motivations are heavily inspired by the acclaimed American spy thriller TV show: Tom Cla...
